pi ter apel
Project Type: Gamified Experience
My Role: UX Designer, Main Developer & Technical Designer
My Contribution: Designed and created the gameplay flow, developed all systems, optimized project performance according to strict technical limitations.
PI Ter Apel is a penitentiary for foreign to the Netherlands inmates. The inmates more often than not do not speak Dutch or any of the more common languages in the country, which leads to walls in communicating with them and other issues that stem from that. Working with other professionals that can help with the situation has proven very expensive and time consuming for the institution, so they turned to me and my team to come up with an interactive and reusable solution to the problem.
The end product is a gamified experience of a day-in-the-life of an inmate at the institution. I designed the gameplay flow with the implementation of visual cues in mind - outlines, colours, widely-known visual indicators for certain things. I also optimized the technical performance of the project as much as possible, because the game needed to be able to run on the poorly performing computers in the prison library. The project was also tested with actual inmates from the institution, and the results were very satisfactory to me and my team!
